Accepting Responsibility for the Board

The recent marches for immigration rights coincided with my doing some consulting work with MALDEF-the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund. The coincidence strongly reminded me that nonprofits such as MALDEF come out of movements, sustain movements, bring the goals of movements into reality, and support new movements as they arise. No wonder totalitarian countries outlaw nonprofits-they are inherently democratic institutions that communities use to make change. - Jan Masaoka

What is Micromanagement and What Isn't?

SPECIAL EDITION FOR EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS.
This issue of the Board Café is unusual: it's for executive directors of nonprofits. While the Board Café is primarily written for volunteer board members, we're proud that many executive directors are among its 31,000 subscribers. As a result, the Board Café will have three issues per year addressing the issues that staff leaders face. This issue: What is Micromanagement and What Isn't? -Jan Masaoka
