Certificate Program FAQs

 

 

  1. Does this program have any pre-educational requirements (i.e. degrees, certificates, prerequisite courses, specific fields of study)?

    A: High School Diploma

  2. What are the fees?

    A: The fees for workshop or seminar registrations are the published fees in our catalog or website.To attain CEU credi,t you need to apply directly to San Jose State and there is an additional $45 per CEU credit (1.0) paid directly to San Jose State University. It will be pro-rated for partial units – increments of .5 if necessary.

  3. Can we count CompassPoint classes we’ve already taken towards the certificate and get CEUs for them? If so, will there be a statute of limitations on how long ago I took these classes?

    A: At this point no.  However, CompassPoint is committed assisting students organize their course of study to what's appropriate to their needs.  Please contact Nelson Layag (nelsonl@compasspoint.org).

  4. Is there an application process for the Certificate Program?

    A: No. Attendees can choose whether or not they want the CEU units. They can attend a workshop/seminar without applying for the units.  Students intending to apply for units will need to inform CompassPoint so we can provide them with the proper information, forms and timelines for CEU applications.   5. What are the financial aid possibilities for this program? Are there scholarships or discounts available?

    A: Currently there are no scholarships available.

  6. How often will Management 101 be offered?

    A: At least once a year in Silicon Valley.  We may offer the course in other locations. Click here for future dates.

  7. Who are the instructors? Are they mostly Academics or Professionals?

    A: Most of the instructors are CompassPoint Staff and are leading professionals in various areas of nonprofit management.You can see their bios and resumes on the CompassPoint website. Additional instructors are respected and well-known nonprofit professionals affiliated with CompassPoint.

  8. Does Management 101 have to be taken first?

    A: It is strongly recommended that you take Management 101 before the electives.

  9. Is the Certificate issued in the tracks, or are the tracks just recommended?

    A: The Certificate is issued as a general certificate in nonprofit management.

  10. If I work for a nonprofit, but it can’t/won’t pay for the certificate, can I still “register” as an individual?

    A: Yes.

  11. Can you take any combination of electives?

    A: Yes. As long as they collectively add up to 8 CEUs.

  12. When will you have the list of electives with confirmed units posted?

  13. Will there be any classes offered on the evenings and weekends?

    A: Not at this time, but we will consider it in the future.

  14. If I took classes through San Jose State University's previous Nonprofit Management Certificate Program, is it possible to count those towards this new certificate?

    A: Yes.  You are not required to take the Management 101 seminar if you've earned at least 2.0 credits already. San Jose State University will be sending you your transcript so you know how many credits you've earned to date. Once you've completed the required number of 8.0 or more credits (including the credits earned at the previous Certificate Program at San Jose State University) by taking electives in our program, you can then apply to CompassPoint to receive your certificate.

  15. Who issues the certificate?

    A: The certificate is issued by CompassPoint Nonprofit Services and is recognized by San Jose State University IES. All credits are issued by San Jose State University IES.
