Plenary Sessions:

1 + 1 = 10 The Power of the Common Good
We know that the most valuable things in our lives aren’t things,(family, friends) and can’t be owned (air, water).  Yet our consumer culture encourages us to spend much of our time pursuing, expanding and protecting things that we own.  Even nonprofits, which take on the role of caring for everything that cannot care for itself, are called to devote some time to pursuing money, building our brand and figuring out how to capture a market share of donors in order to do our work.

What if we shifted that paradigm?  What happens when nonprofits simply pursue, expand and protect the common good?  How can we be nonprofit leaders who speak for the common good? Join four commons advocates as they explore what our sector would look like if we said the common good is our common goal. How does it change how we relate to each other, make decisions, take public stands, work with our colleagues and structure our organizations?  How would this work in practical terms?  And why is the question of the common good the most important question of our time?

Speakers:
Kim Klein, Building Movement Project and author of Reliable Fundraising in Unreliable Times and Fundraising for Social Change
Annie Leonard, The Story of Stuff Project
Trish Tchume, YNPN
Phil Ting, City and County of San Francisco

Breakout Sessions:

Network Leadership
While organizations bring tremendous strength to the work of social movements, they rarely have enough strength and power to be effective alone. Networks are required to contribute to a broader social movement. But what does it mean to be a leader working in a networked way? In this session, attendees will learn about emerging practices and trends in the area of network leadership and explore what roles individuals can play in networks and what to consider in playing those roles.

Managing Organizational Risk Part 1 - Risk Management Basics
Risk is anything that can derail your nonprofit from accomplishing its mission. Risk management does not need to be a mystery; it is a discipline for identifying risk, assessing how serious or sever the risks are, and determining ways to avoid or minimize harm and financial losses. Enlightened risk taking requires awareness of the potential downsides or a new approach or program, thoughtful planning for positive outcomes, and simultaneously ensuring that there is as soft a landing as possible when a venture doesn’t work out as planned.

This session will lay the groundwork for Managing Organizational Risk Part 2 – Enterprise Risk Management.  It will discuss the benefits of risk management, and in nurturing a risk culture for your organization. It will also look at the most common risks facing the nonprofit sector based on 20+ years of claims experience, some specific areas of risk and what you can and should be doing to minimize your exposure.
