The practices around setting and refining organizational strategy are changing profoundly. Today, as leaders we are more concerned than ever with the mandates to be evidence-based, to get our stories of impact across amidst fierce competition for stakeholder attention, and to refine our business models for greater sustainability in an unpredictable economy. This plenary will feature a discussion among three experts who are exploring in their work with a wide range of organizations the intersection of impact, brand, and business model. How do we arrive at clarity about these inter-related organizational dimensions, and how can doing so strengthen our organizations?

Session 1 Workshops (1:30 pm – 2:45 pm)
Beyond Oversight: The Board's Role in Sustainability
According to our latest national leadership study, Daring to Lead 2011, financial oversight is the most common type of support boards of directors provide. But what is the connection between oversight and financial health? Are boards in meaningful partnership with management teams on the big questions of sustainability? In this session, CompassPoint CEO, Jeanne Bell will distinguish between oversight and sustainability, and offer practical means of engaging your board of directors in the most pressing financial questions your organization faces.

Creating a Culture of Effective Feedback: How to Fine-tune Feedback for Greater Results
Feedback is simply information about the past, delivered in the present, that can greatly impact the future. Think about the possibilities if all staff members within your organization were to embrace the ability to give each other effective feedback regardless of position, authority, or role? What if this approach drove greater impact and future success? In this session, find out what highly effective organizations know about and do with feedback. Learn what value-add feedback is, how to engage others in a culture of wanting feedback, and how to give feedback as a gift -- up, down and around you. Take back a practical approach to developing a culture of feedback within your team and/or your entire organization.

Rules of the Game: Election Year Advocacy for Nonprofits
Nonprofits and the constituents they serve have a lot at stake in every election. What role can you and your organization play to help shape public policy and make sure that your constituents are engaged and informed about the upcoming elections? This workshop will focus on how nonprofits can effectively educate and advocate, in particular around elections, while maintaining their nonprofit tax status. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about various laws governing 501(c)3 advocacy activities. This session will focus on the rules on permissible electoral activities for 501(c)3 organizations, including voter registration drives, candidate questionnaires, candidate forums and legislative scorecards. The session will also give examples of election-related activities to avoid.

Daring to Lead 2011 Findings and Implications: A Special Session for Nonprofit Leaders
Many nonprofit executives face significant challenges, including unsustainable business models, lack of attention to core organizational management and leadership needs, under-performing boards, and—especially for new executives—a steep and sometimes harrowing learning curve. Nevertheless, today’s executive directors remain engaged and resolved, reporting high job satisfaction and relatively low levels of burnout. These findings are among those reported in Daring to Lead 2011, a recent study of over 3,000 nonprofit executives nationwide. Join your peers for a discussion of the report’s implications and the actions you can take to better support yourself and lead your organization.

5 Must Have Practices for Program Managers & Directors for Meaningful Evaluation
Evaluation is here to stay. The challenge is how to best use it to advance your mission and demonstrate your impact. We believe the best way to do this is to become evaluative, that is, to embrace a way of being and decision making that continuously assesses the degree to which your efforts are contributing to clearly articulated outcomes. This session presents five practices which will help you as consumers (and hopefully fans) of evaluation and practitioners of evaluative thinking to better be able to do this. Participants will walk away with a set of frameworks and tools which can position them to take the next steps in becoming evaluative.

Leading Organizational Change: Seven Steps to Success
Managing change, small scale and large scale, is an essential skill for nonprofit leaders. When done well, an organization can reach higher levels of cohesion and community impact. If done poorly, resources are wasted and staff and stakeholders are demoralized. Tim Wolfred, who has guided agencies of all sizes through organizational transformations in his 16 stints as interim executive in Bay Area nonprofits, will present his formula for successful change management.

The Practical Applications of “Woo-Woo” for Effective Board Governance
Why is creating a culture of mutual respect, trust, and accountability on your board so elusive? Our tendency is to blame the lack of systems – the “right” policies, term limits, clear roles – or the personalities. Yet, even when we improve our processes, the culture really doesn’t change very much. Your board’s cultural norms are grounded in unspoken and often unconscious rules that cannot be accessed by writing a strong conflict of interest policy or creating annual SMART goals (even though both of those might be needed). The path to better performance may very well be through those dreaded, much-maligned “woo-woo” tools that bring us out of our comfort zones. In this workshop, you will experience what can happen when you are willing to work with the heart and soul of your board.

Finance and Sustainability: What’s a Program Manager’s Role?
Though we often think of finance as the purview of finance directors, board treasurers, and executive directors, in fact, program managers make decisions every day that directly affect the financial health and sustainability of their organizations. In this session, Steve Zimmerman, CPA—author of Financial Sustainability: Making Strategic Decisions for Financial Viability (Wiley)—will outline the core financial responsibilities of program staff and suggest strategies for program managers to increase their own leadership capacity by embracing the financial aspects of their role.

How to Fail Spectacularly (and What You Can Learn from It)
In our mission-critical work, we often can be terrified of making mistakes. At minimum, mistakes don’t feel fun and they are very hard to admit. The world is becoming increasingly complex and the more complex our challenges become, the more necessary trial and error becomes. In other words, failure is inevitable. The question is, how do we embrace failure in our organizations and even learn from it? This session will share stories of spectacular failures, strategies for embracing failure, and how “failing well” can enhance credibility, trust, learning, and innovation.

Strengths-Based Organizations
What would it take to shift you, your team, and your organization from a deficit approach that focuses on remediating weaknesses to a strengths-based one? Is it something you’ve already done or have been working on? Is it something you haven’t even considered? Regardless of where you are on the road to identifying, developing, and harnessing individual, team, and organizational strengths, join this session to explore the strengths-based philosophy as a strategy for advancing organizational effectiveness and employee engagement. Starting with the research behind the strengths movement, we will examine the popular Clifton StrengthsFinder program as well as other alternative models for working with strengths. Going beyond theory, participants will engage in thoughtful dialogue and activities focused on the practical nuts and bolts of building a strengths-based organization.

Participants gain a framework for understanding success and develop a draft mission statement cultivated from personal stories and possible futures. The presenter will also share strategies and tools for reflecting on personal mission alignment.

Adopting Earned Revenue Strategies to Bolster Revenue: Worth the Effort and Risk?
“Diversified” and “revenue” are two of the most hallowed words in the nonprofit world. Yet, when many nonprofits think “diversified”, they stop at government grants and contracts, private contributions and special events. On the other extreme, social enterprises often eschew public support entirely, banking on rapid earned revenue growth and scalability. The primary purpose of this workshop is to explore the middle ground, where nonprofits tap into earned revenue sources to augment and stabilize overall revenue mix, without veering off-mission or incurring excessive risk. The secondary purpose of this workshop is to introduce participants to the choice of legal structures possible with related and unrelated business activities and the impact on the nonprofit sector of newer competing “hybrid-type” social enterprises like the L3C and benefit corporation.
