CompassPoint is publicly endorsing California Proposition 30: The Schools and Local Public Safety Act. We believe this initiative is vital to the health and sustainability of nonprofits in California. If Prop 30 fails, funding for elementary, high school and college education; programs that maintain public health and safety; and programs that support California’s more vulnerable populations, including children and the developmentally disabled, will be slashed by $6 billion.

Wilma Mankiller, the first female principal chief of the Cherokee nation, has often shared her story of the buffalo on the Great Plains of the Midwest.  When a storm comes to the plains, cattle turn and run away from it.

I, along with thousands of others, logged on early this morning to see if the U.S. Supreme Court would uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. And, in a complex and lengthy 5-4 ruling, the Court upheld probably the most significant underpinning of the Act: that Congress has the power to try to expand health care to virtually all Americans (by virtue of its taxation powers).

And yet, with all of our conversations about the inevitability of change, we are often ill-equipped to manage it, let alone lead ourselves and others through it.

After over a decade in the world of philanthropy, I jumped back into the nonprofit world to reconnect to the issue that was the impetus for my career in the sector: youth leadership. As the CEO following a founding director, I realized there were two main roads I could take: one of hunkering down (isolation) or one of reaching out (community). I chose community and, in embracing my choice, I have decided to share my trials and tribulations as a “rad/mad” new leader following a charismatic Baby Boomer founder.

Earlier this month, I had the great fortune to participate in a multi-day retreat with other consultants and faculty members from the Move to End Violence Initiative, a 10-year initiative of the NoVo Foundation that is designed to strengthen sector leaders’ collective capacity to end violence against girls and women in the United States. The learning and reflective time I spent with these strategists and capacity builders made me think about some questions (among many!) we’ve been exploring in our leadership work at CompassPoint: What does leadership really look like beyond the individual or the organization?
