Essential Techie Skills (04/16/2004)
Cartoon Transcript:

Hiring a Techie? Forget experience with networks and databases! Here are the real skills to look for in an accidental techie --
Skill #1: The flexibility to train users at a moment's notice.
Shows woman washing her hands in the bathroom, saying to techie in the stall "I need to do a mail merge with an Excel address list. How do I do that?" Techie says, "Um..." from behind the door.
Skill #2: A knack for suspending all logical thought.
Techie says, "I fixed it by turning off graphics mode." Staff member says, "But that makes no sense. It's a graphics program!" Techie says, "And your point is...?"
Skill #3: Exceptional verbal proficiency.
Staff member says to Techie who's walking by, "Oh Hey -- this plug-in froze my computer. Could you..."
Techie keeps walking, "No."
Staff member says, "But it's..."
Techie, "No."
