Dear CompassPoint Community,
After a period of change and transition at CompassPoint, we’re proud to announce that Jas Hall is stepping into the role of Executive Director at CompassPoint! As we’ve shared in previous updates, this milestone comes after a time of reflection, learning, and retooling our approach to executive leadership after the departure of two women of color co-Executive Directors in early 2024.
Jas has spent the last 18 months in an Associate Executive Director role, engaging deeply in the strategic work we did last year to clarify our core work and staffing model to meet these tumultuous times. As we enter this next era, both Jas and CompassPoint are positioned to create impactful, sustainable programming in support of pro-Black movement operations that help shift power and create durable change.
Growing Leadership from Within
Jas has been a key leader and active contributor to the evolution of CompassPoint for the past ten years. She has grown in her leadership inside the organization, helping shape our approach to relational leadership, human-centered HR, and transformational supervision. Along the way, Jas has expanded her scope from a focused area of expertise into a systems-level view of how programming, operations, strategy, and culture work in service of our mission.
Reflecting on this transition, Jas shares: “When I first joined CompassPoint, I stepped into a space that invited me to lead differently. Over the last decade, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside leaders who model accountability, love, and deep care for the development of movement leadership. Transitioning into this new role feels like shedding old narratives about what I could and couldn’t do. It’s an expansion from leading within a function to stewarding the whole. It’s about holding both the eagle-eye view and the day-to-day realities of how we move the work forward. I am ready to be a steward of the next iteration of CompassPoint.”
Board Co-Chair, Anbar Mahar, shares: “As CompassPoint continues to evolve and respond to the current times, I am confident that Jas is perfect for this role. Both being at CompassPoint for 10 years, and holding the Associate Executive Director role for the last 18 months, she has a unique perspective that will be key to success in this next iteration of both leadership and CompassPoint's path."
A New Chapter for CompassPoint
Jas steps into executive leadership during a time of real churn for the social justice sector. Organizations committed to liberation are navigating political attacks, funding contractions, and increasing pressure on racial justice work. CompassPoint has not been immune to these shifts, and we see this moment as an opportunity to refine and recommit to the values that have always guided us.
Under Jas' leadership, CompassPoint will continue to offer relationship-centered programming. Our public workshops, learning communities, peer networks, and consulting engagements remain core to how we support leaders and organizations.
Looking ahead, CompassPoint’s next chapter will be grounded in pro-Black movement operations capacity building. Over the years, we have sharpened our approach from a broad racial equity frame to a clear pro-Black stance. For us, pro-Blackness is designing with intention for those most impacted by systemic harm. It means designing systems, structures, and cultural practices that support those closest to the margins. Knowing that when we solve for those most impacted by injustice, we improve conditions for everyone.
Jas shares: “In this role, I am committed to rebuilding systems and cultural practices that liberate rather than confine and curating spaces where leaders can practice transformation from the inside out. I believe that leading with accountability is a radical act of love and an authentic investment in everything you touch. What this moment will require is courage and community. We are answering the call to remain unwavering in our commitment to liberation while resisting beliefs and mindsets that evoke fear and divide. No single organization can do this work alone. Our strength lies in right relationship.”
Board Co-Chair, Patrick Brown, shares: "CompassPoint has been doing the challenging work over the last few years to reshape ourselves and best meet this moment. Our partners, staff, and board have leaned in to a deep assessment that drives our new shape, vision, and leadership. We are proud and excited to offer powerful new work."
We are excited for this next chapter of CompassPoint’s leadership and evolution. Please join us in welcoming Jas into this role and in continuing to build the relational, operational, and political infrastructure our movements need for the long haul.
In partnership and solidarity,
The CompassPoint Team
